World’s Most Expensive Chocolate Cake Sold at Auction

Everyone wants to have their cake and eat it too, but would you be willing to eat a chocolate cake that costs upwards of $11,000? A chocolatier by the name of Jacques Torres from New York City partnered with an artist by the name of Carter Jones to create the world’s biggest chocolate egg in time for Easter, and it just so happens to be the most expensive chocolate cake in the world. The egg was auctioned for more than $11,000 at the Big Egg Hunt Challenge, a charity event hosted for Easter in NYC each year.

The egg is 30 inches tall, made of chocolate cake and decorated with chocolate icing. Around the exterior of the egg are all the famous landmarks in New York City. The egg, as it happens, was not an easy cake to make, despite the fact that the mould seems to be a fairly simple one. However, since no mould was big enough for the egg Torres wanted to make, he and Jones had to improvise and come up with creative means to make this chocolate egg work.

The egg weighs an impressive 120 pounds, which is more than many grown women. At this point in his career, Torres felt it was the appropriate time to take on a project such as this one to represent and benefit the City of New York, where he founded his own chocolate business decades ago. Not only did he get to create a world record, make a spectacular piece of chocolate art and take part in a well-known charitable event, his work benefits two New York City charities: Elephant Family and Studio in a School. After being approached by the Big Egg Hunt team to participate in this year’s festivities, the NYC chocolatier couldn’t resist the urge to create something both meaningful and record breaking.
