The Most Expensive Tuna Dish Of All-Time

Most people don’t spend a great deal of time thinking about tuna, no matter their opinion on this particular fish. When people do think about tuna, however, it’s typically whether or not to have it seared or to have it in sushi. What they don’t think about in regards to tuna is expense. It’s not an unusually expensive fish; it’s affordable, which is why most people might be surprised to hear about the most expensive tuna dish of all time.

The world’s most expensive tuna dish is actually part of an expensive Valentine’s Dinner. In February, Michelin-star rated Chef Adam Simmonds offered an 8-course dinner for the couple willing to pay the price for no-expenses-spared romance. The meal features a harpist, champagne, caviar and bluefin tuna – something experts say is close to extinction.

Touted the most romantic meal ever, Simmonds offered to come to the couple’s home and prepare the dish in their kitchen. The cost of the meal was a staggering $99,000. The menu was created to waken each and every sense, adding excitement, luxury and romance to the Hallmark Holiday.

While the tuna wasn’t technically the most expensive portion of the meal, it was part of a meal that costs almost $100,000, which makes it pretty expensive considering. The tuna was served alongside caviar, champagne and even a poet.

Tuna also takes on another expensive title. While it’s not technically a dish, the world’s most expensive fish ever sold is a bluefin tuna. In 2013, a Japanese fisherman caught a bluefin tuna weighing 222 kilograms. He sold the fish to a market in Tokyo for an impressive $1.8 million. The owner of a 24-hour sushi chain was the buyer of the tuna. He admitted to the press that the price was a bit high, but that the fish was worth the price.
