The Five Most Expensive Weapons Ever Built

When it comes to discussing weapons, most people immediately think of a gun. However, the weapons everyday people use are not the most expensive in the world. Even the most valuable collector’s weapons found around the world are nowhere near as expensive to build and use as the weapons created by government programs. Read on to find out which five are the most expensive weapons every built.

F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet – $57.8 billion

This is a plane primarily used by Naval operations. It’s a fighter jet that features missiles that work in the air, missiles that work on the ground and several more weapons. This particular plane comes with either one or two seats, and they are designed for long-term use.

F-22 Raptor – $79.2 billion

What you get with this high-tech weapon is the ability to detect targets and eliminate them prior to being tracked by them. With multiple missiles, and several bombs, this fighter jet means business. It’s also one of the most expensive jets in the world, though it’s nowhere near as expensive as the most expensive one ever built.

Virginia Class Sub – $83.7 billion

Not all military weapons are designed for the sky. Sometimes a water attack is necessary. This particular sub features more than 38 weapons, including missiles and torpedoes. At this particular moment in time, there are eight of these subs hidden beneath the seat patrolling the waters and keeping this country safe.

Arleigh Burke DDG 51 Destroyer – $101.8 billion

It’s another expensive boat. This one, however, doesn’t sit below the ocean. This one sits right on top in plain view. However, it’s not just any boat. This boat features 350 crew members, missiles, torpedoes, and even mine detectors.

F-35 Lightning II – $396 billion

This is the most expensive weapon ever built, and it’s still not operable. The budget keeps going up on this fighter jet, and has been going up regularly since 2001. When it’s finally complete, the jet is going to feature the ability to break the speed of sound, stealth technology and three different versions for three different branches of the United States military.
