It’s about that time of year once again when young future doctors and nurses are heading off to medical school, with a promising career and financial stability ahead of them–employment for physicians and surgeons is projected to jump nearly 18 percent from now until 2022. However, the many years spent in med school can take a toll on one’s bank account. Last year, medical students paid an average of just under $50,000 in tuition and fees to their private college or university of choice. Below are the five most expensive private medical schools in the country based on tuition and required fees.

5. University of Southern California (CA) – $54,653

Located three miles from downtown Los Angeles the University of Southern California’s Health Sciences campus is one of the country’s finest centers for basic and clinical biomedical research in the fields of cancer, gene therapy, the neurosciences, and transplantation biology. The campus is also home to the region’s oldest pharmacy and medical schools as well as the nation’s largest teaching hospital and three patient care facilities.

4. Case Western Reserve University (OH) – $54,976

Established in 1843 and located in Cleveland, Ohio, Case Western Reserve School of Medicine is one of the top 25 medical schools in the nation and has a rich and impressive array of alumni. Five Nobel Laureates have graduated from CaseMed while another five teach at the university. The largest biomedical research center in Ohio, CaseMed gives prospective students an innovative option of three different degree paths.

3. Dartmouth College (NH) – $55,196

Dartmouth College’s Geisel School of Medicine, located in Hanover, New Hampshire, is the fourth-oldest medical school in the United States and one of seven Ivy League medical schools in the nation. Founded in 1797, the Geisel School of Medicine grants Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Public Health, and Master of Sciences degrees. The first clinical X-ray and the first intensive care unit in the country are just a few of Geisel’s milestones.

2. Tufts University (MA) – $56,784

One of eight schools that constitute Tufts University, the Tufts University School of Medicine is one of the world’s best medical research institutions for clinical medicine. Established in 1893 and located in downtown Boston, Massachusetts, Tufts University School of Medicine ranks in the top five for specialized research in the areas of chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, urology, cholera, public health, health care science, and pediatrics.

1. Columbia University (NY) – $57,261

The most expensive private medical school in the nation, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (P&S) is a graduate school located in the Columbia University Medical Center in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan. Founded in 1767, the College of P&S was the first medical school in the United States–at the time the thirteen colonies–to award the Doctor of Medicine degree and is known for having one of the most selective application processes.
