Marshall Bruce Mathers III was born on October 17, 1972 in St. Joseph, Missouri. Eminem’s parents were 14 and 18-years old respectively when they conceived him. His father soon left leaving his mother to take care of him. He shuttled from Missouri to Michigan. Eminem consistently tried to contact his estranged father as a child, but his letters were always returned to sender. He began rapping at the age of 14 and before long gained respect from the Detroit underground rap scene.
In 1996 Eminem was signed to FBT Productions and released his debut album, Infinite under their independent label Web Entertainment. The theme of this album was heavily connected to Eminem’s struggles to raise his newborn daughter Hailie. Things began to pick up when Marshall Mathers changed his name to ‘Slim Shady’. In the Spring of 1997, he recorded his debut EP, Slim Shady EP, through Web Entertainment.
Eminem’s big break came when his demo found its way to Dr. Dre at Aftermath Records. Upon hearing the demo, Dre demanded his staff find Eminem immediately. With the guidance of Dre, Eminem released his The Slim Shady LP in February 1999. The album was incredibly successful going triple platinum. It seemed to be easy for him after that. His subsequent records The Marshall Mathers LP and The Eminem Show were also wild successes. Eminem has released five records since sandwiched around a hiatus he took from the industry. He’s won numerous awards and has sold over 80 million records making him one of the most successful rap artists of all-time.
Rolling Stone has ranked Eminem as the 82nd greatest. He’s the only rap artist to ever win the Grammy for three consecutive LPs.
Eminem has gone on to start his own record label through the help of Interscope called Shady Records. He immediately signed the Detroit-based group D12 who was successful before breaking up. Along with his own record label, Eminem has starred in movies, signed endorsement deals, and wrote his memoir. He won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for 8 Mile making him the first rapper to ever win the award. Eminem currently has his own radio channel on Sirius Radio called Shade 45. He was named artist of the decade by Billboard Magazine in 2009.

He was critically acclaimed for his role in 8 Mile. He’s still releasing albums, but his music isn’t the fire it use to be. There was no artist more popular than Eminem in the early 2000s.
