Multi-Millionaire Chen Guangbiao Treats New York Homeless to Luxury Lunch

It’s always refreshing to see when people who have wealth use that money to do something good in this world. Chinese recycling entrepreneur, Chen Guangbiao, founder and chairman of Jiangsu Huangpu Renewable Resources Limited Company, is most certainly doing that by treating 250 homeless individuals from the Manhattan shelter to a luxury lunch at the Boathouse restaurant in Central Park.

The lunch will feature a menu of sesame-seed-encrusted tuna, beef filet and berries with creme fraiche. Chen will also give each guest $300.

“I was not born into a rich family or a family of government officials. When I was 4 years old my brother and sister died of hunger, so I achieved my success through confidence, self-motivation and my hard work,” Chen said in Chinese in an interview on “CBS This Morning.”

Chen hopes that this event will combat the negative and cliche image of the selfish Chinese businessman who only spends money on himself.  In order to  give the event more credibility, Chen has partnered with the New York City Rescue Mission, the oldest shelter in the nation, to help him organize the lunch.

“Our thought was if someone wants to treat them to an amazing event — something they would never experience on their own, maybe even a kernel of hope that life could be different again, we’re in for that reason,” said Craig Mayes, executive director of the New York City Rescue Mission. “That’s our motive.”

In order to get the word out about the lunch and publicize the event, Chen had ads placed in The New York Times (a newspaper he attempted to buy earlier this year but was told it wasn’t for sale by chairman Arthur Sulzberger Jr.) and The Wall Street Journal.
