Luxury Automaker BMW Recalls 156K Vehicles

Those who spend tens of thousands of dollars on a new luxury vehicle expect a higher standard of performance, which is something especially true of BMW owners. Driving a BMW is not just a status symbol, it’s a luxury that brings with it confidence behind the wheel. That’s why BMW has issued a mass recall of more than 156K vehicles; the German manufacturer has learned that 11 different models sold between 2010 and 2012 are equipped with faulty engines.

Engine Failure

The engines in more than 156K BMWs manufactured and sold from 2010 to 2012 are prone to losing power while driving. These engines are faulty in that they can stall while the vehicle is in motion, presenting not only a significant inconvenience to drivers, but also safety concerns. BMW drivers pay for luxury as well as performance and a vehicle that could potentially stall in the middle of the road is neither high performance or safe. The problem lies in the bolts holding the camshaft housing in place. The automaker says the bolts can loosen enough to break, causing reduced power to the engine that can result in stalling, losing power in the vehicle and even potentially crashing.

Recalled Vehicles

The recall includes several trims; 128i, 328i, 135i, 528i, 535i, 640i, Z4, X3, X5, and X6. Beginning in May, BMW retailers will replace the bolts in recalled vehicles at no charge to drivers. Drivers are responsible for finding out whether or not their particular BMW is included in the recall so that they can make an appointment with their local BMW dealer to have their vehicle fixed.

Furthermore, another 170,000 BMWs manufactured and sold during the same time frame that have inline 6-cylinder engines will not be included in the recall, but the automaker will issue those vehicle an extended warranty at no cost to owners.
