HomeAway Becomes the Largest Luxury Home Renter in the World

The HomeAway Office

HomeAway, Inc., a vacation rental marketplace founded in 2004, recently announced that it has more than 4,500 luxury homes available for rent through its exclusive luxury vacation site, making the brand the largest collection of curated luxury rentals in the world. With luxury homes available for rent in 40 countries throughout the world on every continent except Antarctica, HomeAway has cemented itself as the world’s leading luxury vacation rental site. Luxury real estate offerings include a home, villa, or condo in Belize with one day of private yacht usage, a six-bedroom Victorian oceanfront estate on the Outer Banks surrounded by wild horses, a 10-bedroom private villa in the heart of Marrakesh, a fully-staffed mansion on a 100-acre estate in the Dominican Republic, and a private villa overlooking a local volcano on the island of Santorini. Luxury Rentals from HomeAway is publicly accessible with no membership fees or yearly dues. Less than one percent of HomeAway’s one million live listings make the luxury site, while each available home is critically and carefully examined via a 75-point inspection from the luxury travel experts at Andrew Harper. HomeAway’s luxury offerings average five or more bedrooms and a daily rate of $1,800.

Headquartered in Austin, Texas and founded in 2004 by Brian Sharples and Carl Shepherd, HomeAway, Inc. currently has more than one million vacation rental listings in 190 countries and offers the most comprehensive selection of rentals for families and groups, including cabins, villas, barns, homes, farm houses, and castles. HomeAway became a publicly traded company in 2011 and currently has a market cap of $3.14 billion. Funded by venture capital firms Austin Ventures, Institutional Venture Partners, Redpoint Ventures, Technology Crossover Ventures, and Trident Capital, the company–previously known as CEH Holdings–initially acquired several sites and consolidated them into a single vacation marketplace, launching HomeAway in June 2006. In 2010, the Wall Street Journal named HomeAway one of its top 10 venture-funded companies. HomeAway’s first national advertising campaign reunited actors Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo for a short film and ad campaign based on the National Lampoon’s Vacation series (seen here) that debuted during the television broadcast of Super Bowl XLIV in 2010.
