The Ducati 999: One of the Fastest Motorcycles Ever

Some people purchase motorcycles to simply travel. Some buy them because they want to cruise around while looking really cool. Then there are some people who want super speed, and just want a bike thats faster than a Ferrari. Sports bike have been around for some time, however over the past few decades the world saw a rise in a new type of motorcycle: the superbike. Enter the Ducati 999.

The Ducati 999 were a series of superbikes that Ducati made from 2003 to 2006 and were extremely popular. Even though these bikes are not in production, they are still sought after and retain a lot of after market value. When the bikes were first introduced it was not long until they were quickly adopted by racing teams. The bikes saw great amounts of success in a variety of motorcycle races, including the Superbike World Championship where the saw wins in 2003, 2004, and 2006.

The Ducati 999 was designed by Pierre Terblanche back in the early 2000’s and received a fair amount of controversy over the appearance of the bike. Regardless of the criticism, Ducati went through with the production of the bike. They outfitted the bike with a large V-twin engine that has 4 valves per cylinder with a displacement of 999 cc’s. Although there were a few versions of the 999 produced, mostly all of them had around 140 horse power at 9,750 rpm, which is immense for a motorcycle. This engine allowed the bike to go from 0-60 miles per hour in around 2.8 seconds. That speed is faster than nearly all Ferraris, Lamborghini’s, and various other supercars. Outside of the engine the bike is entirely made for speed: lightweight frame, aggressive riding position,  aerodynamic body, and a variety of other racing-oriented features. The bike has a top speed of around 170 miles per hour.

When Ducati made this bike, it was for two things: acceleration and speed. This is not a motorcycle that you want to take on a 1,000 mile road trip (sport style riding positions take their toll), this is a bike that you use to drive extremely fast. This bike will beat nearly every car in terms of a drag race, and I’d bet it would beat nearly all cars around a track. The bike is actually the 8th fastest production motorcycle of all time in terms of acceleration. When this bike was released it cost around $18,000 dollars and still goes on some used motorcycle websites for $15,000 dollars. While that may seem expensive for a bike, you are getting faster than Ferrari speeds for a fraction of the cost. If you want to go fast, and possibly (most definitely) do not fear death, this bike is for you.
