10 Fabulous Luxury Resorts that are Off the Grid

private beach

If you love to travel and really take in an adventure, you have to try out one of the most luxurious resorts that are completely off the beaten path. While I prefer to go no further than finding our driver in baggage claim and then to his car for a short, short drive to whatever resort we are visiting, some people are far more adventurous. Perhaps you want to be away from it all. You don’t want to be with other families all piling out of their rental cars into the lobby at the same time. You don’t want packed beaches, to wake up at 5 am to grab a good spot by the pool before everyone else, or to be bothered.

Perhaps you want a resort that’s got all the modern luxuries that you expect and prefer, but one that is not easily accessible so fewer people want to bother. Perhaps you like to go off the grid; say goodbye to internet service, Wi-Fi and social media for a while. Perhaps you want to really enjoy yourself and the many different places that the world has to offer – we don’t blame you. That’s why we think you’ll love one of these amazing – and amazingly difficult to reach – luxury resorts. They are not for the unadventurous or the faint of heart.

hotel budir

Hotel Budir – Iceland

Did you know this is the only ocean front hotel in the country? It sits along a lava field, and there are amazing views of natural glaciers from every window. It’s the place to go if you love to look at nature while sitting by the warm fire in the hearth enjoying all the luxuries that are only available to those with unlimited budgets.

kamalame cay

Kamalame Cay – Bahamas

The Bahamas are really only an hour flight from me, so I never really consider it a very desirable location. It’s just like home there, but this island is not like that at all. This private island is only 95-acres, and there is nothing on it. If what you need is a vacation away from civilization, this is the place to go. You’ll find it as luxurious as you could ever imagine with all that it is has to offer, but you’ll also find that it’s private. It’s the kind of place you go to unwind and get away. And it’s probably going to be the least expensive vacation imaginable since you cannot shop here.

travaasa hana

Travaasa Hana – Hawaii

Hawaii is certainly not off the beaten path, but this luxury resort is. It’s on Maui, and it’s in the middle of nowhere. It’s not where you might expect along the beach with the big name resorts. It’s nestled so far away that most people don’t even realize it’s there. If you are looking for a trip that does not include things like modern technology, this is the place for you. You will not find televisions or phones in rooms, and you will not find any other electronics; just sheer luxury and unspoiled beauty.

four seasons

Four Seasons Golden Triangle – Thailand

Thailand is beautiful; just beautiful. This is where you’re going to go if you love the outdoors – not me – and you love camping – definitely not me. However, this is more glamping than anything else since you get to take a private helicopter, car and boat to get here. Each guest has a luxury tent and you get to spend your free time trekking through the wild on top of your private elephant’s back.

las alamanda

Las Alamandas – Mexico

What we love about this resort is that there are only 17 rooms. Even if it’s booked to capacity, no one is bothering you. It’s almost three hours from the airport in Puerto Vallarta, and few people want to venture that far. It’s become a very famous place for celebrities since there are so few guests here, but it’s not something that means you’re missing out. It has beautiful ocean views, lagoons, cliffs and the best part is that there is no internet or cell reception anywhere on the property – something we all need on vacation.

islas secas

Islas Secas – Panama

You will need to book a long vacation here just to make getting to this gorgeous resort even worth it. Trust me when I say I’m not kidding how much work is required to get here. You will fly into the international airport in Panama and then get on a small plane to a smaller airport a while away. Once you get there, you will then drive one hour down the coat of Panama in a private car. When you reach the dock, you spend a half hour aboard a boat to get to the island. It’s all-inclusive. It has only 7 private residences, and it is as private as it gets. However, it’s among the most luxurious resorts in the area.

mombo camp

Mombo Camp – Botswana

Nothing about Botswana sounds like vacation, but this is where the truly adventurous go to have a good time. It’s a big game camp that you can only get to by a private airstrip, a small plane and hours of travel. It’s here that you go to spend time with the most dangerous, most amazing animals in the world, and you also get to enjoy some of the most beautiful views imaginable.

amanoi

Amanoi – Vietnam

When I think of Vietnam, I do not think of happy thoughts. I think of war; but it’s beautiful. Many people come here because it’s out of the way, it’s private and it’s everything. What is lovely about this resort is that it’s not a building. It’s private pavilions all dispersed among the hills with their own private pools and decks that allow you to see the most beautiful views imaginable.

blanca

Blancaneaux Resort – Belize

Belize is one of the most beautiful places on earth, and for good reason. This resort, however, is even more luxurious than you might imagine. It’s got 20 private villas, and it’s not reachable unless you charter a private plane or book a flight on a small plane as well as a landing time on the private landing strip at the resort. It’s located on a gorgeous river, and there is very little civilization at all.

hotel sisimiut

Hotel Sisimiut – Greenland

Greenland doesn’t seem like the kind of place you go to get away on a beautiful vacation, but it actually is. This amazing luxury location is not for the faint of heart. In fact, this is a location that requires you are very adventurous and a big fan of the cold to reach. It’s so far from any civilization that you must board a snowmobile at the airport and then endure a 3-hour ride to reach the resort. Count me out, since I highly doubt my Florida blood could handle that – and I’m positive I cannot pack that lightly.
