Would you Spend $300 A Night to Sleep 400 Feet Above Peru’s Sacred Valley?

Are you a thrill-seeking traveler?  If so this is one “hotel” you’ll never forget.  Skylodge is a trio of transparent pods which are placed 400 ft above the ground on a cliff-face in the Peruvian Andes.  The pods are located near the city of Cuzco.   They’re made from polycarbonate and aluminum, are operated by Peruvian tour company Natura Viva, and overlook the spectacular Sacred Valley – a region renowned for its breathtaking scenery, small villages and death-defying roads.

How big are the pods?  About 78ft by 26 ft.   Other than the $300 price tag it costs to stay in one of these rooms, there’s a little more involved.  You’ll have to climb a 400-foot steel ladder embedded in the almost sheer-cliff face to get to one of these “hotel rooms.”  And if you’re not into using the stairs, there’s also the option of  hiking or using a zip-wire.

Here’s one review from a family, yes family.

“We (two adults and three children aged 10,11 and 14) climbed the via ferrata with Ario and Natalia as our guides. The trip was very well organised, and Ario and Natalia collected us from our hotel in Urabamba and provided all the equipment we needed and a careful safety briefing. The via ferrata is a series of steel ladders that climb 300m up a steep rock face. You are secured as you climb with two snaplink (carabiners) and Ario provided an extra rope for our younger children to reassure their parents! As we gained height we had spectacular views of the sacred valley looking north towards Ollyantaytambo and the ruins there, with the river and road far below us. The climax was the crossing of a wire bridge above a huge drop. We were given an excellent lunch (we liked the banana biscuits!) and then descended. Although the setting was very dramatic (and not for those afraid of heights) our children greatly enjoyed this and we”d recommend it very highly.
