Origins of the rocking horse

Many people have been fond of rocking horses throughout the ages. It is one of the oldest know toy themes in existence. Rocking horses have been around since the Middle Ages in some form. It all began with the toy version known as the hobby horse. Although the horse head was mounted on a stick, later versions presented it as a barrel horse in the sixteenth century using a log and four legs to support a crafted horse head. The next level of evolution happened in the seventeenth century with the use of rockers to mount a fake horse atop for children to ride.

The rocking horse continued to evolve through the ages until the form became more of an art form for decorating purposes because of the sentimentality that it presented to adults who had fond memories of their rocking horses as children. Many rocking horses are passed down through generations of families as treasured heirlooms and to this day, some antiquated versions are considered to be valuable collector’s pieces. They come in all sizes and styles.

The Stevenson Brothers gained their inspiration to design and create rocking horses from their father and Uncle, James Bosworthick. Their uncle crafted toys including rocking horses as one of his many life passions. This is where they gained their initial idea and love of rocking horses. They had hoped that at some point in time their uncle would bestow the gift of a hand crafted rocking horse on them, but sadly this never happened.

Based on the brothers’ previous experience with rocking horses and the love that they developed for them it is no small wonder that they ended up making the brilliant works of art that they sell out of their London based shop. Crystal Rocking Horse is the latest creation in a long line of rocking horses which they take credit for.
