Indian Prime Minister’s Suit Fetches over $690,000 at Auction

Narendra Modi

We have seen some pretty crazy and amazing things that have been sold at various auctions, but we’ve never seen the suit of a prime minister sold before. In some sense, the suit of your countries leader is a weird thing to buy, but in another sense you are purchasing an item that is somewhat linked to history. Well recently the suit worn buy the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, has recently been sold at an auction for a pretty insane price.

Narendra Modi has been in a form of Indian political office for some time, but he just recently became the 15th Prime Minister of the country back in May of 2014. Outside of politics, he is known to have a reputation for his fashion sense, and a particular suit of his was sold. The suit in question is a custom made, pinstripe wool suit that he wore when he met Barack Obama who recently came to visit the country on a lengthy tour and visit. Inside the suit, the words “Narendra Damodardas Modi” are woven in. The suit was one of over 450 items that were put up for auction by Modi in the city of Surat, which is in the Prime Ministers home state of Gujarat.

The suit was definitely one of the most desirable items that were part of that three-day auction, and it sparked a pretty intense bidding war. After it was all said and done, the suit was purchase by an unnamed Indian diamond trader for 43.1 million rupees or around $692,000 dollars. That price is a pretty crazy amount for one to spend on a suit that was tailor made for someone else, but since it was for the Prime Minister of the country it does hold a lot of value.
