Ford Has Begun Testing Self-Driving Cars in The Snow

It has become very clear now that the vast majority of people probably won’t be driving their own car in the future, as cars will be able to drive themselves. We already have cars that are capable of autonomous and semi-autonomous functions, so it’s just a matter of time until they become the norm. Joining the race for the self-driving world of the future is Ford, as they are also developing these vehicles as well. However unlike other companies, Ford is testing their self-driving cars in the snow.

When we see pictures or videos of cars driving themselves, typically the cars are driving on a clear day in beautiful Southern California. Obviously most people do not live in a place that experiences great weather year round, which is why Ford wanted to try working in the snow. Apparently, according to Ford, they are the first automobile company to do so.

Ford’s self-driving prototypes use a range of sensors on top of the vehicles which are constantly spinning at an extremely high rate. This allows the cars to scan the entire area around the vehicle, giving the car’s computer system a 360-degree “view”. The harsh, wintry conditions of Ford’s testing facilities in Michigan make for the perfect location for pushing these cars to the limits.

It won’t be too long before most car owners have a self-driving car, and with the help of Ford and other automobile brands, the roads, especially in the winter, will be a safer place.
