Five Notable Acqusitions by Symantec Corporation

Symantec is a name many recognize. It’s a technology company with businesses in several markets. For the most part, Symantec is most popular for its security, backup and storage products. Consumers use these not only in a professional setting but also at home. It’s one of the largest tech companies in this industry, as well as one of the most successful. A great deal of Symantec’s success comes from making wise acquisitions.

LiveOffice – $115 million

In 2012, Symantec purchased LiveOffice, a company that archived cloud emails. It recently merged this portion of its business with another to create an even more comprehensive storage and cloud service for clients. The cost of this acquisition was only $115 million.

Vontu – $350 million

Vontu was a company that was one of the industry leaders in Data Loss Prevention, something imperative for all business operations. When Symantec announced it would take over the company, they did so in 2007. The price was a staggering $350 million.

Clearwell Systems – $390 million

In the middle of May 2011, Symantec announced that it would acquire a company by the name of Clearwell Systems. The deal was finalized later in the year for a purchase price that exceeded $390 million. This makes it one of the most expensive acquisitions in which Symantec has been involved.

MessageLabs – $695 million

While some acquisitions take months to become finalized, this one did not. When Symantec announced in October 2008 that it intended to acquire MessageLabs, a Gloucester-based business, the company finalized the deal less than 5 weeks later. Of course, it was an all cash deal.

Veritas – $13.5 billion

Perhaps the biggest and most expensive acquisition of Symantec’s is actually considered a merger. In 2004, the two companies decided to merge. It’s still the largest merger of two software industries in history. The price of the merger exceeded $13.5 billion.
